Zhoel and I headed away for a three day New Year’s music festival, Northern Bass, in the nearby town of Mangawhai. We decked out the car with a bed and we bought tons of snacks. We also made our own ponchos from op shop (thrift store) wool blankets.
The music was drum and bass; something that I had never been introduced to before. To be honest, I didn’t have very high expectations, but Zhoel was very excited so I decided to go in with an open mind. I couldn’t have been more mistaken. The music was unbelievably good! We met one of his friends, Jess, and her mates from Dunedin, Jenna, Steve and JT. We set up our cars into a triangle and created a patio type area to hang out in. I had never been to a music festival before and it was great fun! We met tons of people and heard so much amazing music.
I was most surprised by the fact that people had their cars searched quite thoroughly for alcohol. People came up with amazing ways to hide it, including behind the plastic panels in the car door and in the engine block. Everyone was given a wristband when they arrived and they loaded it with money. This was the only form of currency accepted throughout the festival. The first evening there was only one set that we were very interested in, Mala. He was great; I got sucked in immediately and went up to the front of the crowd to dance. It was great fun!
The food stalls were fairly good as well! We enjoyed a couple of the places very much, including a pita place and a Vietnamese one.
